It’s amazing what happens when a team truly believes it can win. The Titans Hockey Union won 7 of their final 10 regular-season games and rolled to a Prospects Cup championship with 6 straight playoff victories, for three consecutive sweeps.
The Titans trailed just twice the entire playoffs and outscored their opponents - Lloydminster Athletics, South Sask HC, and Langley Hockey Academy - 28-11 in six games.
“It’s amazing, the team battled so hard,” said Captain Ethan Shewchuk. “I couldn’t have even imagined it, I’m speechless.”
After sweeping South Sask - who had previously only lost once in the regular season - the Titans were clinical in taking out Langley 6-0 - scoring 4 times in the second period - for a convincing game-one victory.
In game two it was another suffocating attack, outshooting Langley 48-22, with 22 shots in the third period, preventing any kind of comeback from Langley Hockey Academy.
The Titans Hockey Union rode the spectacular goaltending of Landon Strause, who was named THU finals MVP. The southpaw goaltender went 6-0 in the playoffs after a perfect 9-0 record in the regular season. He put up a goals-against average of 1.81 and a save percentage of .940, just off his regular season numbers.
“it feels so amazing man, so amazing, this group is so amazing. I love all these guys, all the effort we put in all year, just all the dedication through injuries and sickness to be in the spot it feels surreal.”
Strause missed almost 3 months of the season with an injury, and when he returned, he was nearly perfect. His strong play gave the Titans the confidence to play freer in the offensive zone and have a relentless attack.
“We played our game, we got pucks deep, we worked our butts off” exclaimed an excited Shewchuk during the post-game celebration.
Max Wishloff led the Titans in playoff scoring with 10 points, while Matthew Busch’s 5 goals paced the Titans.
